I photograph headshot and architectural photography for a living, but I also love shooting street photography, abstract architecture and landscapes - more of it lately with my phone. I've had a camera in my hands for the past 20 years, and I currently work for clients in Indianapolis and throughout the Midwest. Also an electronic musician, pianist, and vocalist (Humblety).

Know Your Enemy

Hate turns the intelligent and kind into stupid and evil. It’s baffling to watch the debates of our day. People aren’t interested in solving issues with their arguments, despite all the energy they waste. People chronically demonize their opponents with vitriolic, self-defeating tactics and mistruths. It makes us feel good to have a bad guy we can feel superior to with our “morality,” but this is of no value. Among the most important skills in a debate is knowing your enemy. It’s something most don’t even consider and knowing our enemy allows us to defeat, compromise with, or befriend — […]

Deep, Down and Dirty with the Stereo MC’s

(originally published August 10, 2001, TheVIEWmagazine.com, revised 10-6-17) story by Josh Humble, photo by Steve Double After a seven-year hiatus from the public eye, The Stereo MC’s are back with a vengeance, showing the world the deep down and dirty side of life. Stereo MC’s, led by Rob Birch and music partner Nick ‘The Head’ Hallam, elevated our minds and got us connected, but they’re on a renewed mission — both personally and professionally — to produce the familiar mind-boggling integration of sonic loops, rhythms, melodies and trippy rhymes that established their formidable reputation. Josh Humble: Hey Rob, what are you […]

3 Vital Elements of a GREAT Headshot

With the extreme automated, mass-produced, mega-DIY culture we’ve become used to, some are perplexed that a good headshot takes more than just a decent camera and someone against a wall or in front of a tree. Finding a photographer who really nails the craft can be tricky. For instance, a photographer who specializes in events, racing, and product photography may know the basics, but if he/she isn’t in practice, there are many things one can overlook to get a clean, sharp corporate or actor headshot … (read more on LinkedIn)

Photography Myth: The More Resolution, the Better

There was a time this was true when digital cameras first came out. At .5mp, 2mp, etc., digital didn’t have the resolution of film. However, that era is long gone. Most consumers and professionals alike are fine with 10-20mp, which seems to be the minimum you can purchase. It takes just 6mp to make a great 8×10 print, and considering most people only stick to smaller prints or phone / web based viewing, even 6mp is more than enough for most consumer needs. The exception to this is when serious cropping is needed, very large prints are being made, or both. […]

Headshots with Baker-Peterson, LLC.

Some time ago, I had the privilege of photographing headshots with a fun bunch of guys from Baker-Peterson, LLC. Owners Steve Baker, Dan Baker and Ron Peterson, featured above, were rumored to be shy about the shoot, but you couldn’t tell once we got going. The shoot was fun, and with the assistance of director of safety & administrative operations, Kate Baker, we were on a roll. It’s not JUST about lighting, composition, and all the technical stuff — it’s about the flow of things, the relationship between photographer and client, and energy of the room. ALTHOUGH the technical aspects are critical, too. Baker-Peterson, […]

Your 2015 New Years Resolution – 10% Off Headshots

We make a lot of resolutions to better our personal and professional lives every New Year. What about starting off 2015 with a FRESH image? As a professional, your headshot is among the most important things, and it’s often what people see first — especially in our online world. Why have a LinkedIn profile that just doesn’t sell who you REALLY are, simply because your profile photo doesn’t match your level of professionalism or personality. Or perhaps it does, but it’s been WAY TOO LONG since you’ve had your headshot taken? We all change, and so does headshot trends. During the […]

Headshots with The Mediation Option, Indianapolis

Photographing headshots with the team at The Mediation Option was a blast. They’re a mediation alternative to the court system for individuals, families, and businesses, and they pride themselves on their comfortable, relaxing environment — much like your home — to resolve conflict in civil and family law matters. They also offer arbitration and parenting coordination. TMO Indy wanted to update their headshots, and with their home-like interiors and partial blue walls, it made sense to extend their identity into their headshots, using their blue walls as the themed background. I created a gradient with a background light to add some pop. […]

Headshots with DigitalRelevance of Indianapolis

When I received the call to photograph headshots of the Slingshot SEO staff for their new partner company, DigitalRelvance, I jumped right into action. Being involved with SEO, marketing, and web design for so many years, it was going to be a pleasure working with them. We covered their entire staff of 60+, taking the time with each subject to learn what made them most comfortable and natural for the camera. Founded in 2006 by Kevin Bailey, Aaron Aders, and Jeremy Dearringer, Slingshot SEO has become a leader in the SEO industry, as well as an outstanding example of entrepreneurialism for Indianapolis. They’ve helped businesses understand how […]

The Most Important Part of your LinkedIn Profile

More and more, social media is becoming a bigger part of business and prospecting. For a lot of my clients, LinkedIn is the most widely used social site, and a genuine, engaging, top-notch profile is essential to making quality connections. There are many helpful resources offering advice on social media, but I recently found this video by Kevin Nichols of The Oechsli Institute to be a good, straightforward guide for LinkedIn. What was THE MOST important item on his do’s and dont’s of LinkedIn branding? Your headshot, of course. Hey, it’s the first thing prospects see, and as the video points […]

Photographing Headshots with Pulmodyne of Indianapolis

I’m always happy to help a brand elevate its presence, while further personalizing them to their customers. Working with Pulmodyne, Inc., I was able to do just that. Some of my clients need a NEW look, updating the style of their current headshot. Whereas others need to further establish themselves with an identifiable face to the public by having headshots photographed for uses they hadn’t already fulfilled. Pulmodyne was established in 1985, and they’re an ISO certified manufacturer of medical devices for anesthesia, respiratory, emergency, and drug delivery. On what sets them apart from their competition, Todd Laderach, VP of Sales and Marketing, says, “Being […]
